The Duchess of Malfi
By John Webster
Adapted & directed by Jennifer Dick
So I through frights and threatenings will assay / This dangerous venture. Let old wives report / I winked and chose a husband.
The Duchess wishes to remarry. She’s a widow, a woman of means, a woman of position. Surely the choice is hers? Her brothers think not. They forbid her from taking a husband and send a spy, the malcontent Bosola, into her household, to ensure she toes the line.
But the Duchess is also a woman of strength who will not submit to their will. In secret she marries Antonio, her steward and they conceal not only their love but their growing family.
In a society dominated and controlled by men, this woman chooses to stand against them.
I am Duchess of Malfi still.
But her decision is a dangerous one, and the consequences could be terrible…
Adapted and directed by Jennifer Dick (Jekyll & Hyde, Sherlock Holmes), this darkly thrilling new production of Webster’s gothic revenge tragedy is not to be missed!
